- What did you do for your service action? When did you do it? What were your specific role and action steps?
I volunteer after school program called Mentoring Tomorrow Leaders as a mentor to counsel students and help lowerclassmen with their homework. I started on August 20th 2014. My specific role was being a mentor to lowerclassmen and the actions steps where to tutor students and motivate them do not give up when things get hard the hard work will pay off. For example, coming to the program can improve test scores in a subject from tutoring.
- What did you learn about the issue or problem you chose?
What I learn about this problem is that student be scared to ask for help or guidance because of being embarrassed or other kids making fun of them for not knowing certain things or information.
- Did you meet new people? How are these people important to your community?
Yes, I have meet new people such as adult mentors and motivational speakers to influence teenagers to stay in school because education is an important factor in life. These people are important to my community by having teenager know that if they need someone to talk to for guidance and enrichment they can go to them.
- Did the actual service turn out as you expected? Explain.
Yes, it did make me come out as i expected because in my community I see my friends mostly go to an alternative school rather than a public school. Some of the friends i have did not get to graduate from high school or already drop out because he/she was not meeting the requirement for a diploma. By me being able to mentor lowerclassmen at my school and an expert in Algebra I, I help student improve grades and learn from my knowledge in mathematics.
- Do you feel your action was valuable to the community? Explain why or why not.
Yes, it was beneficial to the community because it can keep the youth on a positive path which is not to give up when schoolwork get hard in school. Ask for a tutor if needed.
- Was this service project a true example of fulfilling citizen responsibilities to the community and civic participation?
Yes, this service project is a true example of achieving citizen responsibilities to the community and civic participation.
- What could you do differently in the future to make the service better?
What i could have did differently in the future to make the service better is to be able to an expert in other subjects than just Algebra I because i would have been able to tutor more students.
- What do other people, like trusted adults and classmates, think about your project? What have they said to you about it?
People that i know believe that the service that I'm doing is building future leaders and is making a positive impact on students empower the youth to make smarter choices when it come to the students schoolwork.
- What can you do to help this service project grow and continue?
What I can do to help the service project expand by having my friends join sign up to become mentors at my school.
- In what ways has this service project affected you? Explain your responses.
This service project has affected me in an encouraging and supportive way because I want to actually tutor students at my school since I kept seeing some of my friends being withdraw from not either having a 2.0 GPA or is below the requirements to graduate. At Boyd Anderson high school it have a mentoring program where I can train to become a mentor and tutor students at my school. So I took the opportunity & enjoyed mentoring students.
- Will you continue with this service experience? Explain why or why not.
I will continue this service until I graduate from Boyd Anderson because when I leave to go to college I will be moving away from Lauderdale Lakes.
- What tips would you give to classmates just starting their service projects?
The tips I give to classmates that's just starting their service projects is to not just do it because it's required. Do it from the bottom of your heart because you enjoy serving for your community.
Hello, my name is Charmaine. I have started working with students who needed a tutor and mentor who is on the urge to drop out of school. I have been mentoring students who need enrichment in Algebra I and even though it had been a slow progress the result was excellent because the students I tutored was so egar to learn that their academic and test scores begin to increase. We can discuss about how mentors can impact a student positively.
Charmaine makes an excellent point. I would also believe that a mentor can make a positive impact on a student because some student do not try to reach for help because of personal issues and is scared to explain to someone what they are going through in life. Once someone is committed in helping one another it can make the person grow and can have an effect on that person's life.
