01.04 Service Learning Project Part B

 Charmaine Rose
 Lauderdale Lakes
 Young people not finishing school

  • What did you do for your service action? When did you do it? What were your specific role and action steps?
I volunteer after school program called Mentoring Tomorrow Leaders as a mentor to counsel students and help lowerclassmen with their homework. I started on August 20th 2014. My specific role was being a mentor to lowerclassmen and the actions steps where to tutor students and motivate them do not give up when things get hard the hard work will pay off. For example, coming to the program can improve test scores in a subject from tutoring.

  • What did you learn about the issue or problem you chose?
What I learn about this problem is that student be scared to ask for help or guidance because of being embarrassed or other kids making fun of them for not knowing certain things or information.

  • Did you meet new people? How are these people important to your community?
Yes, I have meet new people such as adult mentors and motivational speakers to influence teenagers to stay in school because education is an important factor in life. These people are important to my community by having teenager know that if they need someone to talk to for guidance and enrichment they can go to them.

  • Did the actual service turn out as you expected? Explain.

Yes, it did make me come out as i expected because in my community I see my friends mostly go to an alternative school rather than a public school. Some of the friends i have did not get to graduate from high school or already drop out because he/she was not meeting the requirement for a diploma. By me being able to mentor lowerclassmen at my school and an expert in Algebra I, I help student improve grades and learn from my knowledge in mathematics.

  • Do you feel your action was valuable to the community? Explain why or why not.
Yes, it was beneficial to the community because it can keep the youth on a positive path which is not to give up when schoolwork get hard in school. Ask for a tutor if needed.

  • Was this service project a true example of fulfilling citizen responsibilities to the community and civic participation?
Yes, this service project is a true example of achieving citizen responsibilities to the community and civic participation.
  • What could you do differently in the future to make the service better?
What i could have did differently in the future to make the service better is to be able to an expert in other subjects than just Algebra I because i would have been able to tutor more students.
  • What do other people, like trusted adults and classmates, think about your project? What have they said to you about it?
People that i know believe that the service that I'm doing is building future leaders and is making a positive impact on students empower the youth to make smarter choices when it come to the students schoolwork.
  • What can you do to help this service project grow and continue?
What I can do to help the service project expand by having my friends join sign up to become mentors at my school.
  • In what ways has this service project affected you? Explain your responses.
This service project has affected me in an encouraging and supportive way because I want to actually tutor students at my school since I kept seeing some of my friends being withdraw from not either having a 2.0 GPA or is below the requirements to graduate. At Boyd Anderson high school it have a mentoring program where I can train to become a mentor and tutor students at my school. So I took the opportunity & enjoyed mentoring students.
  • Will you continue with this service experience? Explain why or why not.
I will continue this service until I graduate from Boyd Anderson because when I leave to go to college I will be moving away from Lauderdale Lakes.
  • What tips would you give to classmates just starting their service projects?
The tips I give to classmates that's just starting their service projects is to not just do it because it's required. Do it from the bottom of your heart because you enjoy serving for your community.

Hello, my name is Charmaine. I have started working with students who needed a tutor and mentor who is on the urge to drop out of school. I have been mentoring students who need enrichment in Algebra I and even though it had been a slow progress the result was excellent because the students I tutored was so egar to learn that their academic and test scores begin to increase. We can discuss about how mentors can impact a student positively.

Charmaine makes an excellent point. I would also believe that a mentor can make a positive impact on a student because some student do not try to reach for help because of personal issues and is scared to explain to someone what they are going through in life. Once someone is committed in helping one another it can make the person grow and can have an effect on that person's life.

02.05 The Bill of Rights

Hello Mr. Russell

I’m writing you so I can address a few recent executive orders in my current resident Florida. The government forced people to evacuate from their homes and citizens were denied the right to bring legally owned firearms to storm shelters. I would like to start by stating that the rights aren’t always absolute, set a limit on where to call actions taken by the government dictatorial and separate those that are justified. The Constitution of The United States safeguards are not in place to limit individual rights, but to protect those rights of the people. The limit individual rights put in place to protect all the people. It’s all about comprehening the intentions the founders had when writing the Bill of Rights that in today society are invading and failing to respect people's rights.

Recently your officers and agent have come to the city of  Lauderdale Lakes and forced people out of their homes against their will, Stating it was for their own safety. I’m sure you are recognized with the 4th amendment and you would notice this is a immense violation of the people’s rights. Yes, there might have been a handful of houses that was deluge but that doesn’t justify them for telling people that it’s mandatory for them to leave their homes. Even if there was peril near you can’t force anyone to leave their homes, you can notify them and recommend for them to leave their homes but you can’t compel them to leave their houses

Firearms serve an important part in American society. Another problem the people of Lauderdale Lakes are dealing with is the agents won’t authorize legally owned firearms inside of the storm shelters. If a person own a firearms legally this is a violation of their constitutional right. The 2th amendment explains that people have the right to be arm and protect yourself. Florida law required for a background check to purchase a firearm. They keep governments under control and they ward off some other citizens with hostile intentions. Majority of people are good, some are bad. A person who legally holds a firearm should be allowed, by all means, to protect him or herself at any time in any place.

I would have gratitude if you took time to correct the mistake that are taking place here. I admire and appreciate you for reading my letter to read about the government forcing people to evacuate from their homes and citizens were denied the right to bring legally owned firearms to storm shelters that having been happening in Lauderdale Lakes. Thank you so much!

Sincerely,
Charmaine Rose

02.03 The Anti-Federalists

I would be an Anti-Federalist, because they didn't deplore federalism, they just wanted to make improvements. Anti-Federalism worked to put more power into the states hands, giving state governments more authority. Just as Anti-Federalist believe, I concur with the constitution but the bill of rights that was later added on was important and necessary. The Bill of Rights is a huge essence in our personal rights that we have everyday.

People who supported the constitution as it was and argued for immediate ratification became known as "federal men" or Federalists. They also pushed to get it ratified immediately. Federalists were also in favor of a strong centralized government . Their leaders were usually influential men such as George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. They were proponents of an organized, efficient government that could secure their economic status. The Federalists were orderly and in many states they often controlled the elections of ratifying conferences with their power and influence. "A pure democracy can admit no cure for the mischiefs of faction. A common passion or interest will be felt by a majority, and there is nothing to check the inducements to sacrifice the weaker party. Hence it is, that democracies have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have, in general, been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths." In the course of this conflict, two plans were brought into the picture to find a solution to the issue. The Virginia Plan and the New Jersey Plan. Federalists from large states were in approval of the Virginia Plan, because it would contribute power to the larger states. “We may define a republic to be, or at least may bestow that name on, a government which derives all its powers directly or indirectly from the great body of the people, and is administered by persons holding their offices during pleasure for a limited period, or during good behavior.”

Just because they were known as the "Anti-Federalists" did not mean they were against federalism, they just desire the states to own more power. The Anti-Federalists were loyal to their state governments. Anti-Federalist leaders, including Samuel Adams and Patrick Henry, usually enjoyed more wealth and power than the people they led. They also dread the powers would be designate to a large central government, especially powers of taxation. Some Anti-Federalists focused on the adding on the Bill of Rights and others just despised the Constitution completely. “As long as we can preserve our unalienable rights, we are in safety". Anti-Federalists were supporting the New Jersey Plan as opposed to the Federalists most likely supporting the Virginia Plan. The outcome of the New Jersey Plan was giving more power to the states just as Anti-Federalists favored. "The objects of jurisdiction… are so numerous, and the shades of distinction between civil causes are oftentimes so slight, that it is more than probable that the state judicatories would be wholly superseded; for in contests about jurisdiction, the federal court, as the most powerful, would ever prevail."

The Federalists had a mind set on one idea: Federalists wanted the constitution ratified instantly and that is all. Federalists supported removing some powers from the states and giving more power to the national government. "If we are to be one Nation in any respect, it clearly ought to be in respect to other Nations". They wanted limited government powers use. If the government was a limited then there wouldn't be no Bills of Rights. The Federalists was closed-minded to the fact that there could very well have been improvements made to the constitution. Federalism did not give citizens an opening to their own voices. "To have submitted it to the legislative discretion of the States, would have been improper for the same reason; and for the additional reason that it would have rendered too dependent on the State governments that branch of the federal government which ought to be dependent on the people alone."

Side with Anti-Federalism because they want to have strong, separate state governments, rather than a strong centralized government. They feared that a strong executive wold be ruled by a king or tyrant so the Anti-Federalist believed a bill of rights needed to be added to the Constitution to protect people's right thus giving more citizens more opportunities to be heard and to protect citizens against government. At the same time, they felt that a government that takes away individual freedoms is not worth having.

Lauderdale Lakes

  1. Issue: homeless
  • Whom does the issue or problem affect?
The issue can affect society and an individual.
  • Are others already working on the issue? What can people do to help?
Yes, organization such as Feeding America and Just Give. What people can do is Donate food or clothes to support the cause.
  • What factors contribute to the problem?
Lack of education and job opportunities are also major causes for individuals who are homeless.
  • Where does the issue have greatest impact?
A community or worldwide.
  • When did the issue or problem begin?
Homelessness started in the early 1980s in America. This issue can start from being homeless for a long time or losing a home residence or job.
  • Why do you think it is important?
I think the issue of being homeless is important every day to a greater extent  people losing their job, unable to pay bills, and in the long run lose their home. I have seen families live in cars and work while trying to survive. I believe homelessness needs a lot of attention because every where I go I see homeless people holding signs looking for either work or food.

    • Whom does the issue or problem affect? How does it affect them?
The problem can affect the parents and the child itself. it can affect them by not being able to have a well paying career or have to get a GED (general educational development) diploma.
    • What can people do to help? What type of service might be most helpful to people affected by the issue?
By people volunteering to tutor student and being# mentors to them it can have a positive result that the young people can graduate on time. Mentoring Tomorrow Leaders and Children Stock are programs where a mentor come and motivated a student to achieve their goals in being successful in life.
    • Where can you find people working on it?
You can find people working on young student's finishing school at after school programs, YMCA, and at a mentor's home.
    • When did the issue or problem begin?
The issues have been known for years, however, it can begin with a student getting poor grades or couldn't keep up with the work, had discipline problems where they either get suspended or expelled, or becomes pregnant and had to support his/her family.
    • Why do people think this issue is important?
People believe that young people not being able to finish school is important because it can lead the one person into being unemployed, have poor health, live into poverty or be on public assistance. By people being mentors to a student who think about dropping out of school, it can change that one person mind and can help them believe that having an education is the most essential of being successful.

          Discussion
Hello, my name is Charmaine. I want to start working with a group of motivated individuals who want to tutor and mentor children and/or teens who need encouragement and advice on how to be persistence to strive for a continuous of education and who is not give up and drop out in school. We can discuss the importance of knowledge and support young students need to successful in their life.

Charmaine makes an excellent point. I would also like to add that maybe your group should advertise the organization by making flyers and pass it out around the school. It might spread interests for those who have leadership and would like to become a tutor and a mentor.

I agree with part of your posting. I support you on motivating and tutoring student who are in risk or is failing a class, but I feel differently about trying to make an effort on a student who might not or do not make it half way to do the right thing for their self. It would be wasting someone time trying to change some perspective if they already made up their mind to become a drop out.

          Survivor by Paul Langan

Tarah Carson has a good life, good friends, a great family, a job she loves, and a dream boyfriend. She also has a secret she has kept hidden for ten years, but as a family reunion gets closer and she discovers she will once again have to face her Uncle Rudy. Tarah stressing that her Uncle Rudy is coming to Aunt Deborah's 90th birthday party and family reunion. Tarah has never told anyone what happened with Uncle Rudy when she was 6 years old, and now she's having flashbacks. Uncle Rudy was fifteen when he took Tarah innocence and childhood from her. After hearing she's kind of cranky and paranoid because she's stressing. She's now lying to her boyfriend Cooper, her mom, her best friend - well, everyone. She accuses Shanetta of stealing her boyfriend, and is giving Cooper the silent treatment alternating with nagging treatment. Tarah continues to struggle with doing the right thing until it becomes clear that she is not the only one that is in danger and she will do anything to protect someone else from the abuse. At her job, which is at the daycare, her coworker asks Tarah did she want to babysit for her while she finally has time to herself with her husband. Tarah immediately accept the offer to not go to family reunion and not see Uncle Rudy. But, what she had realized is that Uncle Rudy will be staying the night at her cousin house with a 3 year old child Kayla. Tarah had to make a choice: either not babysit or stay with her cousin’s child to keep her from danger of becoming the next victim. Tarah went to work then after she got off work she went straight to the family reunion to look for Uncle Rudy but her cousin said that Uncle Rudy left with Kayla and he is going to be watching Kayla for the night. Tarah left the reunion to go to her cousin house to find out Uncle Rudy was taking a shower while Kayla was in bed. When Uncle Rudy Came out the shower with his sleeping close on Tarah confronted Uncle Rudy about how he rape her and he wasn't going to touch Kayla while she is there. Uncle Rudy was trying to convince Tarah that he was drunk when he did that & she shouldn't tell anyone about what he did because he's engaged. But, Tarah wasn't trying to hear his side of the story so she had text her boyfriend Coop to come pick up her and Kayla and take them to her house. Tarah felt like a survivor when she got home because the incident make her stronger and she use it to save someone else. The author intend to explain a story to about someone who might feel alone can conquer their fear and help someone else who might be in trouble. The orginizational pattern for Survivor is problem and solution because Tara was hiding her problems from everybody but at the end she learn to conquer her fears to move on and forgive her Uncle about the situation.

Promises to Keep by Paul Langan

Tyray Hobbs is a bully. But when his newest target, Darrell, stands up to Tyray, breaking Tyray's wrist in front of everyone in Bluford’s cafeteria. Tyray buys a gun and waits for Darrell one night. When Night has comes, Tyray can't kill Darrell & turns the gun on himself. Darrell prevents Tyray from killing himself by knocking the gun away. Now Tyray has to deal with the fallout. He is a joke at school. His parents have grounded him for life, and his dad doesn't care how he is physically harming Tyray. The only thing standing between Tyray and prison is the fact that Darrell hasn't speak to anyone what really happened that terrifying night. Sometimes Tyray keep wishing Darrell had not knocked the gun away that night however life begin to become change when he understand why his brother, Warren who is in prison, is telling Tyray that living to fast will end him in jail or even worst, dead. After Warren prison visit Tyray began to focus more in school by graduating and believe that he will make it successful in his life. My personal reaction is Tyray has been hurt through past experience and just looking for guidance or help from someone who will listen to him and not judge him by what he did. The author intended to share that even though you may have a bad past, learn and grow from it into a better person. The pattern organization I observe is cause and effect.

Secrets on the Shadows by Anne Schraff

Secrets on the Shadows is about a boy name Roylin Bailey and he started to attend Bluford High School. Roylin moved from his old neighborhood because his younger brother Tray was shot and killed for being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Roylin was depressed and started to have it sweet until things start to become different for him when Korie Archer comes to Bluford. She is the most beautiful girl in the world and she likes Roylin; Roylin likes Korie. But when Roylin tries to impress her with a luxurious birthday gift, his life starts heading down a slippery slope. First he steals money from a dear old friend, Mr. Miller, and then his Landlord, Tuttle, finds out that he caused that friend to have a heart attack and die. Tuttle is making Roylin pay for his mistake, big time by blackmailing him to do his dirty work. The guilt is eating away at Roylin and even worse Korie is pulling away. Roylin is left feeling guilty, used, frustrated, and sad and all the emotions in between. As Roylin began to figure out something doubtful about Tuttle knowing about Roylin causing Mr. Miller death. Roylin comes to find out Tuttle sent Mr. Miller away to a nursing and was cashing Mr. Miller retirement check. My personal reaction to this book is very interested because it’s almost like a puzzle and once you put the pieces together you get the big picture. The pattern of orgination is cause and effect because Roylin stole money from Mr.Miller and the effwct was to work for Tuttle or he will go to jail for stealing.

Betrayed by P.C Cast and Kristin Cast

.Betrayed was about Zoey Redbird, a "fledgling Vampyre", who is in training to be a High Priestess at the House of Night. As Zoey arrange for her first ritual as the new leader of the Dark Daughters and Sons, football players from a local high school start to go missing. Zoey knows the boys from her preceding relationship with Heath. Day by day at least one of the from the high school was being kidnapped as murder victims but it is making it look as if they are vampyre attacks. While Zoey is trying to figure out who is murdering the boys, she also has suspicion about her mentor & also the High Priestess & principal of the House of Night, Neferet. While Neferet is supposed to guide Zoey through the process of turning into a vampyre, it seems as if Neferet is involved in betraying Zoey. Zoey pursue to examine the kidnappings and murders, she ties Neferet to recent fledglings that have died during the change. When Zoey's roommate and best friend, Stevie Rae Johnson, dies of the Change, Zoey sees Stevie Rae in the school Zoey realizes Neferet has something to do with changing the dead fledglings into evil creatures. The same evil creatures are responsible for the kidnappings and murders of the high school boys. The outline I would use to help me remember important points because it would be much easier to keep track of the subtopics and details that I had read about.

What Kind of Reader Are You? & The Last Thing I Enjoyed.

Yes, I believe the "What Kind of Reader Are You" quiz is accurate with my results being Comedy because I do love to luagh & not be all gloomy & dull when I watch a video or read a book. With the second genre, Fiction, being as a result makes me nuetral to that answer because I like to have to imagine what the writers is thinking about when writing their book but the con can be to that is sometimes I believe that the books can be exaggerating on a topic. The last thing I read I enjoyed was a text message from my best friend Dannel because she had moved to Connectcuit & I'm in florida so we share our memerories about our first year of high school together all the time. Dannel & I talks about seeing each other sometime when we are adults. I would love to meet her in Connecticut because I had never been in Connecticut. We mention how we are going to eat our favortie jamaican food curry chicken, oxtails, with rice as soon as we meet up. Then we would just build more memories by either going places I never been in Connecticut & take photos so when I get back in Florida I can frame some & send her back the ones she loved too.
